Can you still keep hair for a long time when balding?

I realized my dass friend has actually had the same hairline for about 10 years,
Its really recessed and thin but he still has hair on the top and on the side and it looks decent.
I am way less recessed then him so does that mean I could keep my hair pretty long?
Atleast like 4-5 years?
