Marriage used to be a transaction between the father of the woman you wanted to marry and you.
He offered you a young, virgin wife who would give you children and in exchange you would have to provide for the family and protect them.

Now what's the point?

Real love doesn't exist, you mate in order to procreate and that's it. The lonely part is true though, but the first is the main reason Imo.
