Classification of phenotype

Do people in this community really label other people’s ethnicity (white, pakistani, italian) just based on their phenotype or where they genuinely are from, i have white coloring (curly brown-blondish hair, light blue eyes and pale skin) but i am levantine and technically ethnic and i call myself ethnic, and then i see ever so slightly “white” turks calling themselves white and i get confused.
