STEM and STEM related fields were filled with hypercompetitive neurotic people who wanted to become academics/reasearchers/careerists etc since they were 14 or so.
because the exams were rly fucking hard back in the day so you had to work hard if you wanted to get in.
to put things into perspective; in the physics department, literally almost everyone would read physics in their free time.
meanwhile, i have never read physics outisde of studying to pass exams. it was impossible to connect with the people around me.
i went to college to literally fuck around and MAYBE get a degree but this mindset didnt exist back in 2013 appparently.
college changed from an asylum in 2013 to a playground in 2015 because the entry exams got masively nerfed.
