I'm currently running a dog kennel. There's 21 dogs to look after. One night, about two weeks ago, the dogs were barking like crazy and wouldn't shut up. That night I went back to their pens and used a rubber hose to beat the tar out of the ones who had been barking so much. There was a female black lab among them (the majority of them are labs). This female hadn't been one of the ones who had been barking, so she never got beat. However, witnessing me beat the other dogs terrified her. She instantly became traumatized, or "sissyfied".

I've been working this job since mid November and this particular female black lab, Money is her name, has never had and problems with any of the other dogs. Anyways, over the next couple days I kept doing the same routine. Every morning after waking up I'd let them into the yard and put them in three separate pens. At night, before going to bed, I'd lock them in an indoor area with four separate pens. I'd put about 5 dogs in each of these indoor pens. Anyways, after the beatings Money was terrified of me, terrified of the other dogs, and terrified of everything. I didn't initially notice how the other dogs were treating her differently until one morning. I had gone back to let them outside for the day. When I got to Money's pen all of the other dogs had her in a corner. Her hair was all disheveled and every other dog was aggressively barking and nipping at her. After I let them out I noticed that the side of her face had a gaping hole in it. They's been abusing her all night. From then on I've been keeping her separated from the other dogs at all times.

Humans and dogs aren't the same. But, although they can manifest in different ways, we do share some of the same behaviours. If you're scared of interacting with other people, people will surely take notice and act accordingly. You might not get a gaping hole ripped in your face, and then again you might, but you're definitely gonna get ostrasized.

It's always the kid on the playground who doesn't want to fight that ends up going home with a black eye.
