They were saying that life is harder now because it's gotten so easy, and everyone is so tech addicted and stunted, that it's ironically harder as family and community values have eroded. It seems like the Stone Age (which a vast majority of our ancestors lived in) was easier because we had each other to rely on for survival, while now we have artificial societal pressures, career, and family goals that go against what's norm. I felt my ancestors were both in awe of our modern age but also confused by the stupidity of its expectations and demands.
In terms of visceral survival like access to food, water, and shelter, life is easier, but in terms of tech addiction, social isolation, lack of in-person community, and unhealthy societal pressures, we're in hell.
