Perming your hair WAVY, not curly ... I am too lazy to continue, the results speak for themselves.
For reference, here is my ugly ass as at 14 ...
Before.
After.
Now I shall begin.
Perming your hair.
Go ahead and book an appointment at any hair salon for a perm, once you arrive ask for a wavy perm and usually, they will bring out orange rods for your hair and begin applying them, for better results, ask for purple rods only on the sides of your hair. When they apply the perm solution, it will smell grotesque as fuck, but that's okay no one else can smell it besides you once they rinse the solution out.
Also unless you perm your hair every month, perming your hair won't damage your hair, I am on my fifth perm for reference ... and I perm my hair once every four to six months.
Now, it is time for maintenance, here is a list of shit that you can't and can do right after the perm.
DO NOT:
- Shampoo or condition your hair for five days after the perm
- Brush out your curls for two days after the perm and most especially do not brush your curls out dry
- Fuck with your hair too much, scrunching is okay just don't ruff up your hair and pull your curls apart.
DO:
- It is okay to wet your hair right after the perm and apply any product so it's not so nappy and frizzy, it is also okay to wet your hair whenever you want to refresh it.
- Before they dry your hair, ask them to apply product to your hair so your curls are nice and defined.
- Sleep well, sleeping won't fuck up your perm don't worry.
My Routine.
At the moment I do not use any shampoo or conditioner, in fact, I haven't shampooed my hair in around a year, yet my hair looks healthier than ever as well as apparently smells good according to others, if you believe that this habit is nasty, once your perm your hair I dare you to go use shampoo, you will very much quickly see why I stay away from shampoo. I am too lazy to delve into the specifics of my decision right now, but in short most commercially available shampoos, conditioners, and products contain many harmful chemicals that not only dry out your hair in the long run but force your hair to develop a dependency on said product for moisture. In addition to this, most of these products contain chemicals that are harmful to your health, in fact, I even use a shower filter on top of filtered water to ensure my hair is as healthy as possible.
Here is the link to the shower filter I use: Link
STEP ONE (Showering).
Every morning I wet my hair with COLD WATER, as hot water causes dryness, in the shower as I am unsatisfied with how dry and untamed my hair is upon waking up. Then to dry my hair upon exiting the shower, I scrunch my hair with my hands to squeeze out any excess water as drying your hair with any material can cause frizziness. As an alternative to this method, you can use a t-shirt or microfiber towel but that will cause a slight amount of frizziness compared to my method, however, DO NOT dry your hair with a towel, and ONLY scrunch dry your hair.
Once every couple of days I also detangle the ends of my hair with my fingers in the shower with cold water running on it.
STEP TWO (Leave-In Conditioner and Curl Cream).
Apply a generous amount of Desert Essence Coconut Hair Lotion to all areas of your hair until it feels moisturized and soaked in product, don't be scared to use multiple dime-sized servings of this stuff. You can follow this up with a decent amount of Desert Essence Coconut Curl Cream to all areas of your hair as well. By the time you are done applying these two products, your hair should feel moisturized and be soaked in product.
These two products will load your hair with moisture.
STEP THREE (Curl Gel).
Apply around five dime-sized servings of Not Your Mother's Curl Gel to all areas of your hair as well.
This product will lock the moisture into your hair.
STEP FOUR (Mousse).
Apply a fistful of Aussie Mousse & Leave-In Conditioner to all areas of your hair, BUT focus on the roots of your hair and the ends of your hair as well.
This product will give your hair some volume.
REMEMBER TO SCRUNCH IN ALL OF YOUR PRODUCT.
STEP FIVE (Drying).
Make a nice shape with your hair while it is wet and leave it as be, don't fuck with your hair while it's drying, just straight up and leave it alone until it is around 80-100% dry, then you can scrunch everything out. Once you don't touch your hair for a while, it will become hard and sticky, this is good. This essentially means that all the product is locked into your curls, once you scrunch out your hair, that cast will go away and your hair will be extremely defined and reap all of the benefits of your applied product.
Additional Tips.
Diffusing your hair.
If you want to speed up the drying process of your hair, you can diffuse your hair, but just remember whatever you do ... DO NOT use a regular blow dryer.
When diffusing my hair I use the low-speed and low-heat settings throughout my diffusing process, I hover over the roots (top of your head) for around five to ten minutes then alternate between the front, each side, and the back of my hair for one-minute each until fully dry or at least 50% dry. I also use Desert Essence Coconut Hair De-Frizzer & Heat Protector Spray after applying all products and before diffusing my hair.
Castor Oil.
Around once a week right before I am about to scrunch out my hair I apply a couple drops of castor oil and scrunch out my gel-cast, this turbo-hydrates my hair and gives it a nice shine.
Styling your dry hair.
When your hair is dry you can scrunch it and fluff it up, no damage will be done, I usually scrunch the rest of my hair then turn my hair upside-down and scrunch up the roots.
