There are works, but it mainly comes down to faith.

Start with watching street preacher videos. I recommend Dorre Love and David Lynn on youtube. Watch how they win every argument, that will strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ. https://www.biblestudytools.com/nkjv/matthew/ Read this version of the Bible (NKJV). The KJV is better but very hard to understand as it uses Old English. Here is an online version, I have a hardcopy but it works the same. I advise you to get a hardcopy though, I got mine on Amazon for like 20 CAD. Read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) in the New Testament. Also pray, ask for forgiveness of your sins and ask for your spirit to be submerged in the Blood of Jesus.

Church isn't mandatory, but fellowship is. Church is fellowship but fellowship doesn't have to be Church. You don't have to go every week. Praying and singing hymns to the Lord with 1 friend counts.

Hell is permanent yes. On average, you have 80 years to get right with God. Do you know how much time that is? You have so much free time to get right with God, especially as a young or old person. Everyone knows who Jesus is. You know his story. It's on you. I think it's a completely fair punishment.
