Yes it was primarily a class struggle, one of the biggest figures in the revolution was arrested and died in France after being deceived, he was captured and died in French custody only then did a more radical leader Desaillines take power, The French also conducted mass executions in retaliation to his cruelty.

Multiple expeditions were sent by France, thousands of men died but they couldn't stop the revolution but it didn't work.

For it's "crimes" France demanded Haiti to give them 150 million francs which is like 21 billon dolars in todays currency a debt which is still active today btw.
