Because a lot of ugly facial features can be hidden by the melanin, and plus women are attracted to melanin men.

Also dark skin men are more likely to have Eurocentric features, and lightskin men are more likely to have Asian like features, and Asians are the second lowest when it comes to smv

but i´ve seen it constantly switches based on trends from time to time light skins are more sought after then later for some time it flips and this repeats over and over

too pale or too dark is bad unless you have a certain niche (ie pale goths/ contrast maxxing etc)
