deadlifts are fun and my back looks insane now because of them. plus its pretty much the only way to build a strong lower back (spinal erector muscles)

Deadlift is a trash excercise , humans are not built for loaded flexion of the spine which is what the deadlift does.

Pointless excercise that causes serious long term damage to your spine.

I have a damaged disk in my spine from deadlifting.

Pull ups build and amazing back and mechanically its what you are made to do hanging and swinging. And causes no spinal damage.

you are claiming that humans are not expected to pick up something heavy off the floor..? we’ve been doing that for thousands of years lol

functional strength from deadlifts means that something like moving furniture becomes MUCH easier to do

also, care to explain how humans are expected to be hanging and swinging...? lol we aren’t monkeys. Although I do agree pullups are the GOAT back exercise. I think deadlifts are also good if performed correctly and not “ego” lifting

Ahh jeez to answer this properly is going to take alot time getting sources..

Put it this way, you never see 60 year Olds lifting heavy weights for a reason they know it will bust their joints further.

If you were to be dead by the age of 30 as it was 1000s of years ago you can wear your joints down , but it won't last untill 60.

Your spine has cartilage disks that get stressed when picking up heavy things . Your muscles don't bare the whole weight.

This doesn't happen with pull ups it even decompresses your spine.

We are built to walk long distances.

Great explanation tbh, can’t really disagree with any of this.

Deadlifts are fun to 1repmax and to showoff how much you can lift but only if you have proper form and wear a belt because deadlifting with bad form can easily damage your spine.

Deadlifts are cope. Firstly, who tf wants to train legs and back in the same workout (JFL what split are you doing!). Second, deadlifts build thickness sure but so do seated rows which ISOLATE the back and not the legs. Thirdly and most importantly imo, deadlifts will activate a lot of core and thicken up your waist. Big waist = its over

I did deadlifts the first few years of working out but probably would have skipped them if I had to do it over again. Didn't see any dropoff in physique after stopping them.

I do wonder if doing the real heavy squats in my teens cost me some potential height. I am 6'1" but it seemed they cost me a little height at least while I was doing them with heavy weights.

Deadlifts done with proper form are the best exercise for adding muscle mass - even more so than squats in my opinion. However, it is very hard to maintain correct form when lifting heavy which can place too much stress on the lower back.

In all honesty, like everything else on this forum it's risk V reward. If you stick to calisthenics, you are unlikely to suffer serious injury but unless you are very genetically gifted you will struggle to add mass to your frame as you progress.

Each to their own I suppose.

Pointless ego exercise that will give you a big butt and make it harder to have correct ratios.
