Before Addressing How to Fix an Overbite/Overjet, Understand
What Causes One to Occur
An overbite/overjet can be influenced via genetics, but can be created due to unhealthy habits, including, but not limited to, nail biting, teeth grinding, tongue-thrusting, pacifier use/thumb sucking after the age of three, etc.
Side Effects If an Overbite Is Left Untreated
If an overbite is left untreated, it can cause some/all of the following: jaw pain & stiffness, tooth decay (resulting in bone resorption), gum disease, difficulty chewing, etc. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to fix. Act fast.
How to Get Diagnosed
Getting diagnosed with an overbite/overjet is the first step in addressing the problem. In most scenarios, your doctor/healthcare provider will take an X-ray to examine the alignment of your teeth before recommending any procedures. To get diagnosed, just book an appointment with either a dentist or your healthcare provider via website, email, phone, etc.
Treatment Options
Treatments may vary depending on severity and age. Treating either one in children is commonly easier due to softer bones, allowing for easier movement. Those still undergoing puberty can opt for a palate expander (which widens the roof of the mouth). However, if you're past puberty, your orthodontist may suggest traditional braces, premolar extraction; however, I heavily encourage you to decline, as this is what is known as "camouflage orthodontist." They're merely covering up the problem; this will result in straight teeth but a much more recessed jaw. Ask your orthodontist for damon braces, this effictively fixes both an overbite and overjet, straightens teeth, and also reduces the time needed for treatment.
Not medical advice. Do your own research before committing to treatment
