testosterone converts into dihydrotestosterone (dht) thanks to the 5α-reductase type 2 isoenzyme (5αr2)
ars (androgen receptors, which dht has 5x higher affinity towards to than test) bind in hair follicles, targeting the dermal papilla cells (dpc) which orchestrate hair growth, cycling, size and shape and also contain 5α-reductase
as you can imagine dht binding to ars in these cells is going to be detrimental to our hair because of a process called follicle miniaturization, this triggers the upregulation of tgf-β1 and tgf-β2 (transforming growth factor-β1 and β2) which shorten the anagen (growth phase) by inducing a premature catagen, (programmed regression that comes before the telogen) and by inhibiting keratinocyte proliferation, furthermore prolonging the telogen, (resting phase) effectively producing thinner and shorter hair each cycle, eventually putting the targeted hair follicles into a dormant state, making you completely bald in the ar dense area on your scalp (crown and corners mostly, it affects the mid-scalp most of the times aswell if left untreated tho)
if you wanna know more about the biochemistry of dht on hair follicles on chest and beard, of dht blockers or of why hgh is said to have hair-improving qualities let me know i’ll explain below
