Did I miss an opportunity to insult a guy back?

I was walking my dog in my neighborhood. I usually allow my dog to walk in a green square of grass that is not on anyone's property. In the middle of the grass was a big pile of wet grass. My dog was sniffing it. A guy came out and said "that's acid, I wouldn't allow your dog to eat that" in a rude way. I said "okay" and took my dog out. He then walked back in the pool area and said "allowing his dog to eat **** while he stands there." I had no idea that the grass had chemicals in it.

I feel like I missed an opportunity to say "**** you." or "I never knew the grass had acid in it" to indicate I was angry.

Was I a pussy for just standing there without saying anything? Thoughts?
