Different Elastics

Today my Ortho put class 2 elastics on one side of my jaw and class 3 on the other, I asked him what it does and he said it’s to correct my bite but it looks like it’s shifting my jaw to the left/right even though I asked and he said it doesn’t do anything to jaw or recess but it don’t sound believable icl. Anyone got experience on this?

pretty sure class 2 elastics push upper jaw backwards and lower jaw forwards (recesses u) while class 3 elastics push lower jaw backwards and upper jaw forwards (gives u a bit of forward growth
