Aesthetics of the Nostril Base |
Recessed Nostril Placement Is an Under-Discussed and Underrated Nose Falio
The trait of having forward-set nostrils is rarely if ever discussed in this community. But it’s important for nose aesthetics. In this thread, I’ll explain what looks good and what looks bad, and the shortcomings of rhinoplasty and bimax procedures when it comes to nostril aesthetics.
Aesthetic Caucasoid nose viewed from the bottom up:

Aesthetic Ideal: Forward-Set Nostrils Separated from the Philtrum

Their nostrils are forwards on the nose; their nostrils don’t “rest” directly on their philtrums.
Here’s a 3D model I made to clearly illustrate the geometry of this nostril base type:

Unaesthetic Subhumanity: Nostrils that Rest Directly on the Philtrum

Their nostrils aren’t set forwards on the nose; their nostrils directly border their philtrums.
Here’s a 3D model I made to clearly illustrate the geometry of this nostril base type:

Ethnicity
Caucasoids have the most forward-set nostrils and have the highest prevalence of the aesthetic “separated” nostril base type. But all races can have either type of nostril base. Nostril base definition is a continuously variable trait in humans.
For example, here are 2 black women: the person on the left has the 1st type of nostril base, and the person on the right has the 2nd type of nostril base.

So now you know the difference between the 2 kinds of nostril bases. A defined nostril base with nostrils set forwards off of the philtrum is more aesthetically pleasing than a flush nostril base with nostrils directly resting on the philtrum.
The Bimax/LF1 Issue

As seen in the above before and after, Le Fort 1 osteotomy “squishes” the maxilla against the back of the nose, which may make the nostril base look worse. This is an item of concern for East Asian patients and people who already had bad nostril bases to start with. Like this guy:

Nasal Septum Advancement in Bimax/LF1
Is it surgically possible to pull the nasal septum fowards during a LeFort 1 maxillary advancement? The before/after bomax/LF1 results I saw seem to leave the nose in place as the bone around and below it are moved forward, leaving the nose flatter/snubbier after. I don’t want to get that...

Nose change issues with Le Fort I + surgeons?
1. I need to understand the impact of Le Fort I on nose shape. From what I understand base of nose is affected by bone changes. What are risks of this giving you an "apeish" skull shape and making nose less appealing? How to mitigate this? 2. Also, please list best surgeons in Europe that...
The Failure of Asian Rhinoplasty
The biggest problem with Asian rhinoplasty results from what I’ve seen, is that the surgeries don’t Caucasoid-ify the nostril base!
Nose jobs that go from shit nostril base to shit nostril base:

I’m not knowledgeable about rhino, so I don’t know if it’s a limitation of what’s possible with rhinoplasty, or if it’s an aesthetic oversight (patients and surgeons not knowing what they need to look best). If anyone knows whether it’s feasible to advance the nostrils farther forwards off the philtrum, please reply.
How Much Does Nostril Base Matter?
Nostril base is underrated and not talked about enough. But it’s far from the biggest deal when it comes to nose aesthetics.
Many people have dogshit-looking noses with forward nostril bases. Like this guy:

Nostril base matters, but it isn’t everything.
