Meaning, do you engage in lookism?

I know I do, even though I’m ugly myself, I still feel a sense of revulsion or slight disgust when looking at or interacting with someone extremely ugly, while I tend to favor and attribute positive traits to people who are attractive (not just girls but guys too)

Do you think this can be overcome? How much of lookism is innate/hardwired into us, and how much of it is learned through experience or society? Tell your thoughts below

In my opinion it is the most predetermined/biological form of discrimination we use as humans

this is just engraved into our mind really.. as nice and fair as i try to be you can never remove the thought "damn that guy is ugly" from my mind

it's something that happens subconciously.

thoughts like these also directly tie into how you treat a person - therefore we're all "lookists"

It’s almost like how we smell bad food and feel sick, I would say lookism is kind of on that level of primal judgement

Definitely , I’m starting to think it basically can’t be overcome honestly. I always thought of myself as superior because I make myself aware of these biases and judgements, but even with all this knowledge it’s not enough to cancel out such a primal instinct. If I saw a true 2/10 in the street I would feel a little sick, and if I saw a true 9/10 I would feel good (not in a sexual way but from an esthetic ally satisfying way, like looking at a masterpiece painting). The truth is I’m no better than any other human because I make the same subconscious discriminations.

I feel like people who get rated lower than me look better than me, ngl.

It’s genuinely fucking insane how much louder aesthetics speak than words or even actions, perception is so much more important than intention

You can’t suppress natural human reaction to ugliness. It’s the same as when you see and/or smell shit. As much as people want to claim it’s natural blah blah blah your brain will still subconsciously register „it“ as something you should stay away from. :feelspepo:

Yeah exactly I don’t think even racism or sexism are as “coded” into us as lookism is

It really does fucking suck how our brains are evolved to discriminate based on looks rather than intelligence or merit or kindness, as humans our hardware is not up to date with our morality.

But also maybe these flaws are what makes us so “human”

I can conversate with anyone, as long as they don't brutally height mog me(aside from childhood friends and family members, i.e. like >= 6'3), then my ego kicks in. In this aspect I guess I'm lookist.

Against sub5s though ofc I'm going to feel disgust, but I don't treat them differently. We all have biases, you just have to acknowledge them. Like I know I'm a racist, I believe in race and don't believe we are all equal.. but I don't go around calling blacks nigger and treating them any less. The worst I probably did to a black was one time I was selling something to one, and accidentally went down a line of dialogue assuming he couldn't afford it.. and tried to find a product that would be more affordable.. nigga humbled me quickly(with attitude, nothing outright) and I treated them properly and continued to upsell them.

Well said

I would say it’s not lookism in the first case you mentioned, that’s just envy imo which is very different
