British psychologist Frederic Bartlett in the 1930s detailed abot this in his book Remembering (1932) he studied how people recall and retell stories or images over time, particularly in a "serial reproduction" setup
  • One person hears or reads a story (often something unfamiliar or complex, like a Native American folktale called "The War of the Ghosts").
  • They retell it to the next person from memory.
  • That person retells it to another, and so on, through a chain of several people.
The key finding. The original story doesn't just get slightly altered it transforms into something entirely different. Even simple sentences "Alice saw a red car hit a blue bike at noon." After multiple people: "Bob heard about a fiery crash involving trucks last night."

One famouse message that got changed insanely was this the original message: "Alice saw a red car hit a blue bike at noon." After multiple people: "Bob heard about a fiery crash involving trucks last night."
I learnt about this in psychology last year it relates to his theory of reconstructive memory where he says we have schemas (packets of knowledge) which we use to confabulate (make up) details of previous events as our memory is incomplete. He theorised that everyone's individual schemas are unique due to environmental and cultural differences in upbringing.

This is basically how dragon folklore may have originated btw. Some clueless nigga saw an unusually large cockatrice in the shishapangma mountains and the the whole thing evolved as ppl began imagining it as some kinda fire breathing reptilian

Some say it was a beast that englishmen saw in china during a voyage, but it later went extinct. It then found its way into drama and poetry of the elizabethan era. Obviously no evidence has been found yet
