Well their midface is already good in order to get complimented....
I think this is a causation vs correlation type situation

A lot of babies and kids smile and a lot as all of them have compact midfaces
Until....
The age you start liking girls, then she rejects you, and instead of going to the next girl you stress, then all the stress and reduced smiling fucks your face up

smiling gives you :
- an illusion of more defined face
- dimples if you have it
- and a more compact midface since the lips go higher and so do the philtrum
- a higher fwhr due to fat concentration in the middle of the face.

And obv if you have a good smile, and wide palate it's a big plus
