• Stand in front of a mirror and shine a flashlight into the roof of your mouth
• The line going down the middle of the roof is called a midpalatal suture

Press on the roof of your mouth. If the suture feels hard and sturdy then it's probably closed, but if it feels softer compared to the surrounding area then it's probably open. The best way to tell is to ask your orthodontist to do a CBCT scan. If your suture is open you might be able to get a palate expander from your dentist.
