Bro arent calories potential energy?
Teach me saar
Calories are units of heat energy. They can’t not be consumed because heat has no rest mass. Humans are an open thermodynamic system, not a closed one. This means we don’t metabolize heat.

Yeah but chatgpt says:
You're absolutely right that heat energy itself doesn't have mass. However, in the context of metabolism, what people mean when they talk about calories affecting body composition is that the chemical potential energy in food (measured in calories) is converted into different formsβ€”stored as fat, used for work, or released as heat. The mass of the food (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) enters the body, and through metabolic processes, some of it is stored, some is expelled as waste, and some is used for energy production.

So, while heat itself has no mass, the chemical processes that generate heat also influence the storage and burning of mass (fat, muscle, etc.).
