Procedure:

1. Extract Pseudoephedrine:

2. Red Phosphorus and Hydriodic Acid Reaction:

  1. Setting Up the Reaction:
    • In a 500 ml round-bottom flask, combine 100 grams of pseudoephedrine, 50 grams of red phosphorus, and 150 ml of hydriodic acid.
  2. Heating the Mixture:
    • Set up the flask on a hot plate. Heat gently at 120Β°C for 6-8 hours. Use a reflux condenser to keep the reaction under control.
  3. Cooling and Filtering:
    • Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Filter out the red phosphorus using a coffee filter, collecting the liquid in a clean beaker.

3. Lithium-Ammonia Reduction:

  1. Preparing the Lithium-Ammonia Solution:
    • Strip the lithium from 4 AA batteries and place it in a beaker containing 500 ml of anhydrous ammonia.
    • Add 50 grams of sodium hydroxide to the mixture and stir gently.
  2. Adding the Pseudoephedrine Solution:
    • Slowly add the filtered pseudoephedrine-HI mixture to the lithium-ammonia solution. Stir gently, keeping the temperature under 40Β°C.

4. Extraction with Ether:
