It's more subtle than anything. There's downright racists and people that will be vocal about it and treat you like shit. But more often than not it's really subtle, like a small joke that isn't really a joke, accent mocking (even if you don't have one), stereotypes, etc.

I think most people conflate racism with sexual desirability. You'll see mass movements from ethnic women demanding the media place their women on screen or show them in magazines, etc, and claim racism and society will accept that. They fail to realize women view race as a much more important factor than men and race/color is important and it really isn't racist to use that in selection criteria, people have for a millennia.
