Yeah, I heard this argument. But I do not think it is true.

What we know for a fact, is that a very small minority of men really reproduced at that time, like 6-7 females per 1 male.

BUT I do not think this was connected to looks. It was more about survival. Most males died before 20. Those who lived up to 30, logically were either smarter, stronger, more aggressive, or all of the above. These traits can exist in people which are not "conventionally attractive" today. A person with small height can easily be very aggressive, and agile, avoiding fatal hits from angular prey. Tall guys also die from famines and wars easily. Square jaws while a sign of high test in the mother's body do not guarantee that a person is going to be high-T in real life. Finally, a recessed jaw did not prevent the guy from being the smartest in his tribe, and setting good traps, which would easily make him possess a lot of food, and impregnate hundreds of females.
