After some point, obsessing over looks will have diminishing returns. Meaning that the advantage you gain by increasing your looks will be offset by the low self-esteem vibe you will give to others.

No girl wants a man that looks at his hairline 30 times per day in the mirror. That behavior is more repulsive than being bald

You learn to suppress the behaviour when interacting with others.

The deeper into this I get the more I understand what my anorexic ex was going through and why I couldn't really do anything to help her.

Shallow interactions yes. But the sooner someone gets to know you better, you will disappoint them. It may be fine for a girl to be insecure about looks, but for a male, it's not acceptable.
