im 17 as of this month now. i currently work fast food 3 days a week (friday saturday sunday) on average 20 hours a week. i get paid $13 an hour, and the job is fucking gruesome. i stand for the whole shift and am confined to one small area, its high stress, too much pressure and overall just a difficult job, but fortunately im able to manage. I was planning on getting a job at retail (walmart,kroger,best buy, home depot, lowes) something of those sorts. any suggestions and insights of how its gonna be compared to fast food

don't work retail. there is a steeper learning curve and more physical labor involved. it sounds like ur working the drive thru at a fast food place. i would recommend staying in food-service, but moving to a fast casual restaurant. fast casual is better than fast food for a few reasons.

1) No drive thru, so there isn't a constant flow of customers with the stress of creating/handling a new ticket every minute. you will do a variety of tasks instead of a couple high-stress ones.
2) Customers are less hurried and less rude. You will see more regulars.
3) People are more likely to sit down at a fast casual place since there's no drive thru, giving you the opportunity to provide service. The food is also usually higher quality and there may be some presentation/performance skills involved. Like if you work at a sandwich shop, the customers will see you sprinkling subs, slicing meat, wrapping, etc. These factors make it likely for them to tip you.

there is one caveat, which is slop bowl places (chipotle, kava, sweetgreen) don't really have these benefits since they're super busy and don't encourage tipping. try sub shops (firehouse, potbelly, jersey mike's), ice cream shops (chain or local), pizza places (mod pizza, blaze pizza).

1) u have to learn where all the products are located and product gets moved around frequently, depending on the store you may need even more specialized knowledge like a hardware store or pet shop

2) there's pretty much always shit to do in retail so you don't get much downtime other than assigned breaks. also have to lift heavier things. at least in fast casual dining there are some dead hours. i've heard from friends in retail that stores tend to be short staffed because of turnover rates + steeper learning curve (depends on the place) so they've basically been forced to work overtime. fast food has higher turnover than retail but i think fast casual should be much lower based on my experience.
