mate selection is driven primarily by men, not women. According to this perspective, women do not actively “choose” in a strategic or competitive sense; they merely respond to male initiative by accepting or rejecting offers. Men, especially high-status or high-value men (“alpha males”), are seen as the true selectors, pairing only with women they consider equal in status, looks, or social value. As a result, people tend to form couples within the same perceived level: high-status men with high-status women, and low-status men with low-status women.
