The crimes of, let's say, richard ramirez before getting caught, were just done... how?

Well, by not leaving prints, not letting witnesses have much leverage, not being caught on camera, and not leaving much DNA behind and not being tied to the crime. There wasn't a genius 300 IQ plan with serial killers before they got caught, or a specific type of crime. It was just that type of crime meeting those conditions.
