its just becoming aware of the ego, some people after using psychedelics or meditation lose the notion of self and when it comes back they start to see what the ego is, defense mechanisms for survival and many of their problems never actually existed as they were useless defensive mechanisms that created anxiety and depression.

psychedelics arent necessarilly associated to an existence of god/spirituality and they can be very useful for people who cant rationalize their emotions
