Space is very interesting from the perspective of physics, studying phenomena, trying to figure out if there is life elsewhere, how the universe started etc. A lot of input for metaphysical questions came from the field of astronomy/astrophysics. But all those things happen at such large distances and under such inhumane conditions that we can't really travel there with the current technology. Sending men into space is really pointless. Except maybe some kind of expensive tourist attraction of seeing the earth from above, and that might indeed be possible in our lifetimes.
