I just realized why I've been feeling so good today. That increased drive, euphoric mood and mental clarity I've had all day is actually because I've legitimately been freezing my balls off. There's no hot water and heating at my apartment rn. Took a cold shower anyway, shivering and am still feeling cold, but my brain has been flooded with dopamine for like 11 hours straight, ever since it got cold in my apartment (temperatures were barely above freezing point tonight). I've also been fasting for about 30 hours.
Cold exposure is actually a crazy dopamine booster. It's uncomfortable physically, but my brain loves it. Not even drugs like cocaine or nicotine can produce such a long-lasting effect. On top of that, you'll burn a lot of additional calories and it's a great antidote for laziness; you'll naturally want to get up and DO SOMETHING to get warm.
So far, the most effective and - most importantly, 100% free - dopamine/noradrenaline boosters I've tried are fasting, exercise, sunbathing and cold exposure. Being comfortable all the time legitimately destroys your mental health. Turns out our brains are masochistic in nature and cannot distinguish between pain and pleasure effectively, as both stimulate the same neural pathways.
Tl;dr: Cold exposure causes a powerful and long-lasting dopamine increase comparable to drugs and can significantly improve your mood, alertness and productivity.
