I saw this in theaters. And before it came out they did this whole viral marketing thing. First of its kind. And the internet was kinda new at the time, so people were way more gullible. My friend showed it to me like 2 years before the movie came out. Like, the marketing didn't even say anything about a movie or anything, they kept it super low key. Just a shitty website about some people who got lost in the woods. And, you have to understand, there wasn't social media at the time and it's not like they were advertising it everywhere. They just "leaked" it in the truest sense of the word. Imagine just one random dude you know telling you about some obscure haunted woods shit. There was no reason to think it was any sort of marketing. So then when they finally start advertising for the movie, it's like "Hey, I heard about that shit once, like a year ago, about those people who got lost in the woods." Fucking scared the shit out of me, like I was legit terrified of this movie. So, fast forward, there's a part in the movie where they get a little bundle of sticks from the Blair Witch or whatever, and I whisper to my friend "Hey look, it's a faggot." Peak 1999 humor. I have never been scared of anything since.

I'm watching Tar

What a weird coincidence. There is an ambient scream in Tar and apparently they used a clip of the girl screaming from The Blair Witch project. And I wouldn't even have known this if some random redditor hadn't recognized the scream and I had randomly read their comment after finishing the movie.

Seconding The Blair Witch Project since you haven’t watched it yet. After that, I suggest True Detective (a TV show, but only the first season).
