  1. Growth depends more on nutrient adequacy than calorie surplus.
    • If you’re getting enough protein, vitamins (especially D), minerals (especially calcium, zinc, iron), and essential fats, growth can continue normally — even in a slight calorie deficit.
    • Source: Golden NH et al., “Nutritional interventions in adolescent athletes,” Pediatrics, 2014.
  1. Studies on adolescent athletes in weight-class sports (e.g. wrestling, gymnastics):
    • When intake is tightly controlled but meets protein and micronutrient needs, no stunting is observed.
    • 📚 Source: Mountjoy M et al., “Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S),” BJSM, 2014.

    • 🧠 Summary:

      If you’re:

      • Still eating enough protein, fats, and carbs
      • Getting all essential micronutrients
      • Maintaining the deficit mild to moderate length
→ Then growth is very unlikely to be affected even in a above 40% defecit.
