Mediocrity, fear, subjection to the world. All this appears to me today as a double mirror that the prince of this world slides like a diaphragm between the roots and the summits of the soul: so that the latter can no longer mirror themselves in the former, nor can both nourish each other happily, like heaven and earth. Not only does this mirror attempt to separate the two parts of the soul, but to isolate them both in obstinate self-contemplation: the roots of the roots, the summits of the summits. Thus are born languages with watertight sections; on the one hand: "Life is something else, maintain a healthy sense of proportion, we do not create literature," on the other: "the sublime mission, the sacred name," etc. The rhetoric of the roots is established, and that of the summits and the petrification, both of the idea and of life.
