Should I make a thread about alcohol
I've tried a lot of different brands, finishes of alcohol. Cheap stuff, the shady stuff, local brews, allocated bottles, Flavoured, unflavored. Im mainly a whiskey enthusiast but I've also tried many different bottles wine, rum, beer rye, vodka(ew). I can make some good recommendations cheap...
I see too many guys out here getting wasted on cheap vodka. If you're broke but still want something that tastes good, stop punishing yourself.
What I recommend if you want to buy some cheap whiskey is buy bourbon. American bourbon from American distilleries.
Grain alcohol or white dog as it is called is harsh, medicinal and has a nasty taste. Drinking it straight is like drinking rubbing alcohol with a bit of corn flavor. It just burns your tongue so whiskey needs to be aged. Agein pulls out sulfur, fusel oils, and bitter compounds over time.Oxygen slowly enters the barrel, causing oxidation that mellows the spirit and the Alcohol and acids then react to form esters, which give fruity and sweet notes so ageing is important but it is not all the same ageing that whiskies go through.
American whiskey especially bourbon, matures faster due to the hotter, more humid climate in Kentucky,Tennessee, Louisiana unlike in Scotland, cooler temperatures mean aging takes 10-18 years for complex flavor making most good quality scotches expensive.
In the US, 2-4 years in new charred oak barrels gives deep color and rich flavor quickly so there's plenty of good tasting bourbons for cheap. Bourbon also uses corn which ischeap and abundant in the US vs. Scotch which uses malted barley. Overall if you are low on cash just buy BOURBON..
Some key terms to keep in mind
Bourbon-At least 51% corn,Aged in new charred oak barrels,Must be made in the USA,Sweet, vanilla, caramel, spicy flavors
Straight Bourbon-Aged for at least 2 years. If less than 4 years, label must say the age
Bottled in Bond-At least 4 years old. 100 proof (50% ABV) Made in one season by one distiller.Government-regulated for quality-great value
High Rye Bourbon-Uses more rye in the grain mix. Spicier, drier taste
Wheated Bourbon-Uses wheat instead of rye.Smoother, softer, creamier (e.g., Maker's Mark, Larceny)
Now for some recommendations
Under $20
Can be sipped neat because this is decent quality booze but I'd recommend having it on rocks or better in mixed drinks to cut down on some of those harsh notes.
Evan Williams Black Label - Sweet smooth solid budget choice

Old Forester 86 Proof - Old-school flavor, holds up well in cocktails

Benchmark No. 8 - Made by Buffalo Trace(Big name)light and sweet

Very Old Barton - Rich for the price but very hard to find

$20-$30
Can be sipped neat in glencairn
Wild Turkey 101 - High proof, spicy,flavor-packed

Larceny Small Batch - Wheated, very smooth, no harshness

Buffalo Trace - Balanced, slightly sweet, great all-rounder (but often hard to find)

What to avoid
Avoid Canadian whisky under $15. In my experience they are all bland and watery. Avoid bottom-shelf Scotches. They taste horrible. They are harsh and often loaded with grain alcohol. Super cheap flavored whiskey: it's sugar water, not whiskeyDon't fall for age snobbery. A 4 year bourbon in Kentucky can taste better than a 12-year Scotch.Look for Bottled in Bond or Straight Bourbon on the label for reliable quality.
