A hobby isn't supposed to restrict your life and it doesn't take away more from you than it gives you.. Take for example hobbies like singing, drawing or playing an instrument, these don't affect your ability to do your daily routines or don't interfere with them at all, meanwhile gym will deplete your energies for the rest of your day making you not able to do your routine normally. A person shouldn't be doing exercise for more than 10 - 20 min a day, let alone lifting weights like a slave, if you do it way longer you will experience energy depletion not matter how well you eat it won't go away until you go to sleep.
How singing restrict my life in any way? It doesn't but when you are a gymcel you have to count your macros, you have to eat more food, you have to look up for new lifting techniques, you are lethargic all day, you force yourself to do something painful, you are worried you aren't making enough gains, etc. A young guy shouldn't be living like this, teens from 40-30 years ago would have never lived these weird and stressful lifestyles, these are your best years (in comparison to the upcoming years) and you are wasting them living like an abused dog.
I would even say that gym is not even a hobby, you do a hobby because is something you like to do not something you choose to do to get external validation from others. You feel great while doing your hobbies, the fulfillment you feel after going to the gym is fake, it's just endorphins, you don't enjoy lifting weights unless you are a masochist.
