Healthy medium/long hair tips

Just wondering if anyone has tips for growing their hair out to be healthier and tougher. I am always in a cycle of wanting longer hair when I cut it short, and getting irritated by it when it's longer and deciding to cut it short again. Whenever it's long, I end up taking a lot of hairs out every time I comb my hair, even briefly. My hair is thick (not balding), but dry/brittle and unruly.

I tried the "nopoo" (zero shampoo) idea for a few months. My hair was just greasy and overly oily. I shampoo about 1x per week now, and hate how my hair feels
(unruly and gets in front of my face a lot without an oppressive amount of product) for 2-3 days afterwards.

I've heard about things like argan oil, does anyone have experience with it?
 
well, foids take supplements and apply oil mixes to hair, apparently it helps

What's msm? And do you mean eating Vitamin C in your diet, or some kind of supplement/product?
