A Russian mother has reportedly been arrested for selling her newborn baby to pay for a $3,600 rhinoplasty.
The 33-year-old mom, whose name has not been disclosed by Russian media, was arrested in late May on suspicion of human trafficking in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, southern Russia.
The woman is said to have given birth to a baby boy on April 25 and just five days later she took a small deposit of £274 from a couple looking to become parents.
She "agreed to hand over her newborn son, who was in a state of helplessness, for a reward of 200,000 rubles ($3,200 USD)," according to a statement from Russian officials obtained by Newsflash.
"She then issued a waiver for the rights to the child, and the suspect received money amounting to 20,000 rubles for the child from the third party."
"On 26th May, 2022, she received the rest of the money amounting to 100,000 rubles," the statement read.
Few days after the purchase, the boy fell unwell and the couple were asked for his birth certificate by medics when taking him to hospital.
It’s unclear who alerted the cops, but the ‘heartless’ mother was quickly taken into custody, along with the pair who illegally adopted the newborn boy.
"Subsequently, information about the crime committed became known to law enforcement officers," according to the statement
The birth certificate cost the couple equivalent of £1,370 with the mother negotiating a price based on the cost of a nose job, the couple claimed following their arrest.
The suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 91 and 92 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation.
It’s unclear what charges the couple may be slapped with.
"Currently, a series of investigative actions is being carried out, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed and consolidating evidence of the suspect's guilt."
"The issue of choosing a preventive measure against her is being decided," the statement concluded.
Officials have not disclosed who is currently caring for the baby boy, who is now two months old.
