This 20-year-old Algerian, who was in France illegally, attacked an 80-year-old man on 10 August in Gerland, knocking his victim to the ground and beating him up so he could snatch his gold chain.
The victim was not present at the hearing as he is still in hospital.
He arrived in France in 2024 and has been committing thefts in Paris and Lyon for only a few weeks. During the hearing, the prosecution revealed that he almost reoffended five days after the attack on the octogenarian, as cameras in the Lyon metro filmed him following a nonagenarian before he finally changed his mind.
The public prosecutor requested a three-year prison sentence, but the Lyon court slightly reduced the sentence. The young migrant was instead sentenced to 30 months in prison, with a committal order. He will then be banned from entering French territory for ten years.
