According to surveillance video and witness statements, the suspects exited their car, claimed to be members of the "Asian Boyz" gang, and accused the victim of owing them money for drugs. When the victim denied knowing them, they hurled racial slurs, then brutally beat, punched, kicked, and shot him twice in the back before fleeing.

Some far-right bloggers fabricated background stories suggesting the suspects acted in self-defense against an anti-Asian attack, which is untrue. The victim was not targeting Asians and has no criminal history—he is a Pediatric Emergency Room Technician at Temple University Hospital.
