How are you supposed to take a conversation past small talk

Like Genuinley, besides saying how are you, how was your day, etc. What the fuck are you supposed to say. I have a friend/acquintance, and we talk ocassionaly, I ask him how his day is he asks back, how do you take it past that. Are you supposed to make stupid jokes to them, and act like an idiot or what. I'm so ND its over.

But generally a conversation is 'flowing' where you jump from one topic into another
