How come the old school bodybuilders didn't have the pop out abs?

They were obviously low enough body fat, but they didn't have the 6 pack abs? . They aren't vacumming in these pictures, but clearly they are low body fat, but do not have "6 pack" ab look. I think ideally, they were striving for balance and aesthetics and a small trim waistline but not the pop out abs. It seems like after the roids they started wanting to push the abdominal look. Maybe it affected the physique.

they weren't really nearly as lean, steve reeves was probably over 10%. current BBs are 5% on stage.
