Oil was the issue, he had the Romanian oil fields but they were too far from his front lines and the logistics of getting them to North Africa and Caucasus and France was impossible.

If h managed to win at Stalingrad and cut off Soviet forces in the Caucasus form their primary commmad then the war would essential be over.
