Cause we had societal rules and punishments for adultery. Now we reward it by taking away half of the males income and giving it to the woman.

Because women depended much more on men, most didn't pick based on looks but social status and it was the norm for women to settle down early with a male provider and build a family.
Today women can get paid just as much as men; in certain market even way more than men while doing fuck all (sex work) so they don't have to rely as much on men for resources thus so they can start picking by looks, not to mention with the reach of the internet such as dating sites they have plenty of options to choose from thus they became pickier.
It's only since the past century where looks has become more important than social status but then again, good looking = social status in and of it self.
