Title. In the modern age there are many avenues to make money and become rich. Even tho the chances are slim unless you are high IQ you still have a chance if you play your cards right but what about in olden times? Maybe a mercenary?

Now its much more feasible to grow from a nobody to being fully stacked. Especially with the rise of social media and the internet in general. Some mid-tier youtubers can earn even $30M in a span of 5-10 years alone.

Not even that, but investing, the lotto, actually working hard and being high iq as you said, hell even gambling. It's all things that didn't exist in the olden times.

Back then, it was be born rich or lose.

How far back are we talking?
Quite similar to how it's now. Highly intelligent people who got also lucky could get into trades like banking, become merchants, advisors and beurocrats at the royal court, navigate ships (requires understanding of math and astronomy), the military and church were avenues to gain influence as well.
Highly skilled specialists with a good reputation like architects, inventors, artisans could get quite wealthy as well.
