How did the myth of it being common for conventionally attractive women being with conventionally unattractive men start and why does it persist?

Despite everything proving that to not be the case? Is it just because men are considered less attractive than women and because of how high women’s standards are? Most women, especially conventionally attractive women do NOT give the time of day to an ACTUALLY conventionally unattractive man. At worst the man is average, not ugly
