It was back in 2015. After I was reading blackpill comics (redpill comics back then) I unbeknownstly went to this site named Sluthate (a lurker, not a user) and saw so many guys in similar predicaments and how fucked they were. One of them used incel to describe themselves. It wasn't until that r/incel on reddit that the word incel became popularized, and negatively affected the connotations.
