How do you prevent build up in your belly button?

I picked my belly button today (I take showers every other day generally. I was soaping and picking at my belly button two days ago) and I pulled out what looked like a bunch of brownish lint with some hairs. And it really smelled bad. Yikes.

How do you prevent build up and smell like that in your belly button? Do you have to pick your belly button daily or what? I didn't notice a build up like that the last time I picked it two days ago.

Do I need to start shaving my body hair near my belly button?
