For me I usually send 4-5 before I ask if they want to meet or go out.
Friends of mine have said this is on the low side and they normally talk for a lot longer, but texting is too brutal for me, so I prefer just ripping the bandage off and risk either getting a date quickly or getting ghosted or 'shelved' if they're not interested enough.
