That's not unordinary if you want a GOOD half sleeve. Most decent artists will charge $150-200 an hour, and a high quality half sleeve can take up to 15-20 hours of tattooing to complete.
There's a lot that goes into it (stencil/placement, linework, shading, white highlights).

You also should TIP if you want to remain on good terms with your artist. I've always tipped big, ex: $200-300/session, and now my artist charges me less, doesn't ask for deposits, AND gives me immediate bookings instead of waiting

A high quality half sleeve will cost you $3k+. That means good inks that will age well, photorealistic design and execution.

You get what you pay for. Sure, you can get one for 500 dollars but it will look like shit.
Expect it to take 20-30 hours minimum. A good tattoo artist charges more than 100 dollars an hour unless you live in a third world country.

I've got a full black and grey realism sleeve on my left arm (just getting some tiny spots filled in my next aptmt).

By the end of next month, I will have two full sleeves on both arms
